編織心智與幾何的軌跡
—— Tela Aurea Lab 的誕生

從一個夾在背包上的捕夢網,到融合黃金比例與演算法的數位工具——這是一段關於手工藝、數學,以及跨越文化邊界的尊重的旅程。

一、起點:精神病房、一個背包上的捕夢網,八年前

Tela Aurea Lab 的種子,種在八年前。那時,我是一名職能治療實習生,在精神科病房陪伴一位患有思覺失調症的個案。經過一段時間的治療,他的狀況已趨於穩定,準備出院——鼓起勇氣備考公職,踏上截然不同的新生活。

為了替他送行,我選了製作捕夢網作為活動。這個選擇,不只是為了訓練手部精細動作,更是想借用捕夢網的象徵意義——過濾噩夢、留住好夢——作為一份啟程前的祝福。

我永遠記得,當他完成作品的那一刻,臉上綻放出的喜悅。他立刻把那個捕夢網夾上了自己的背包。

那次活動順利落幕,但對我來說,旅程才剛開始。這次經歷讓我深深著迷於這項手工藝,開始自行探索各種繞線技法。在線與框架之間穿梭的過程裡,我意外找到了一種平靜——一種心流的感覺。從此,每當感到壓力或需要重新整頓自己,親手為自己編一個捕夢網,成了我無聲的儀式。

二、拆解:從七十件手作,到圖騰背後的數學

離開病房後,這門手藝始終跟著我。當時台灣的手作坊和文具店,只提供最基礎的材料包,遠遠不夠滿足我想探索的深度。於是我轉向網路和 YouTube,整理出約 12 種常見基本圖騰,再在這些技法的基礎上發展出自己的設計——迄今,我已在 Instagram(@brown.yeh)記錄了 70 件以上的原創捕夢網設計。

8年 從病房到工具

在這個過程中,我發現了一件迷人的事:這些看似直覺、充滿藝術感的網格背後,隱藏著相當精確的數學結構。交叉的線段,呼應著包絡線曲線的物理張力;特定網眼的大小,暗合黃金比例;某些圖騰的節點遞進,本質上就是等差或等比數列的視覺化。

然而,當我想設計更繁複的圖騰時,遭遇了瓶頸。在圓形框架上找出對稱均勻的錨點,需要耗費大量時間與心力——而後續的編繞必須嚴格遵循這些底層規則,一個節點偏差,就可能打亂整件作品的平衡。手工製作的限制與幾何精度的要求之間的張力,讓我開始思考一個問題:有沒有更好的方式,把腦海中的設計帶進現實?

三、轉化:從研究所的 Python 練習,到數位設計工具

轉機發生在我進入職能治療研究所之後。那時,我需要學習程式語言來進行研究數據分析。學到某個時間點,腦中突然浮現:函式、迴圈、條件判斷——這些不正是處理等差數列、幾何對稱所需要的工具嗎?

於是,我把「用程式畫捕夢網」當成學習 Python 的自我挑戰,成功寫出了只需輸入幾個參數就能自動計算並繪製基本圖騰的函式。後來,在研究所期間開發了幾個研究用的應用程式之後,一個更大的念頭悄悄成形:如果程式能幫助我精準作圖,為什麼不打造一個直覺易用的工具,讓世界各地的手作者和創作者都能這樣做?

這個計畫一擱,就是好一陣子。直到今年,借著 AI 與「氛圍程式設計(vibe coding)」的浪潮,我重新取出多年前寫下的邏輯,與 AI agent 合作,一步步讓這些演算法甦醒——Tela Aurea Lab 就這樣誕生了。它不再只是筆記型電腦裡的一段程式碼,而是一個真實可用的設計工具,能將靈感轉化為 SVG 向量檔案。

四、回到根源:致敬傳統,以及一封跨越太平洋的邀請

即使我沉浸在拆解捕夢網的數學與幾何時,我始終清楚地知道:這門工藝承載著 Ojibwe/Anishinaabe 部落深厚的文化意涵,而它的旅程早已遠遠超出起源之地——被分享、被改編,也有時被挪用。我很早就試圖透過 Cath Oberholtzer 的著作《Dream Catchers: Legend, Lore and Artifacts》了解它的歷史與傳統技法,但在台灣,始終難以找到一個能夠更深入討論這段歷史的社群。

真正的轉折,恰恰發生在 Tela Aurea Lab 成形的當下。當我在網路上分享這個新工具時,收到了來自加州的教育工作者 Gretel Palmerin 的一則留言。她溫和而堅定地提醒我:要邀請那些以捕夢網為自身文化一部分的原住民社群同坐這張桌子。

她的話觸動了我,也成為這個網站背後安靜的心願。這個善意的提醒,開啟了一扇意想不到的門。透過這段交流,我認識了加州洪堡郡的教育工作者 Maggie Peters——她致力於推進美國原住民研究課程,同時也以聯合國永續發展目標(SDGs)為框架,在加州與台灣的原住民社群之間搭建跨文化的教育連結。這讓我隱隱看見了 Tela Aurea Lab 可以成為的那個樣子。

Our Story

From a dreamcatcher clipped to a backpack in a psychiatric ward, to a digital tool shaped by golden ratios and algorithms — this is a story about craft, mathematics, and the long arc of cultural respect.

The Beginning: A Psychiatric Ward and a Dreamcatcher on a Backpack, Eight Years Ago

The seed of Tela Aurea Lab was planted eight years ago. At the time, I was an occupational therapy intern working in a psychiatric ward, supporting a client living with schizophrenia. After a period of treatment, his condition had stabilized, and he was preparing to leave the hospital — bravely setting out to take a civil service exam and begin a new chapter of his life.

To send him off, I chose dreamcatcher-making as his craft activity. The goal wasn't only to train his fine motor skills, but also to draw on the dreamcatcher's symbolism — filtering out bad dreams and holding onto good ones — as a kind of blessing for the road ahead.

I will never forget the joy on his face the moment he finished his piece. He immediately clipped it onto his backpack.

That session ended smoothly, but for me, the journey was only beginning. The experience left me deeply drawn to this craft, and I began seeking out different weaving techniques on my own. As my fingers moved between thread and frame, I found an unexpected sense of calm — a kind of flow. From then on, whenever I felt stressed or needed to reset, weaving a dreamcatcher for myself became my own quiet ritual.

Breaking It Down: From 70 Handmade Pieces to the Mathematics of Pattern

After leaving the ward, the craft stayed with me. At the time, craft stores and stationery shops in Taiwan only carried the most basic material kits — nowhere near enough for the kind of exploration I wanted. So I turned to the internet and YouTube, gathering tutorials until I had distilled around 12 common base patterns. Building on these techniques, I started creating my own designs — and to date, I've documented more than 70 unique dreamcatcher designs on Instagram (@brown.yeh).

Along the way, I discovered something fascinating: behind these grids — which feel so intuitive and artistic — lie remarkably precise mathematical structures. The intersecting threads echo the physical tension of an envelope curve. The sizing of certain mesh openings reflects the golden ratio. And the progression of nodes in certain patterns is, essentially, a visualization of arithmetic and geometric sequences.

But when I tried to design more intricate patterns, I hit a wall. Finding symmetrical, evenly distributed anchor points on a circular frame took an enormous amount of time and care — and the weaving that followed had to strictly follow these underlying rules. A single misplaced node could throw off the balance of the entire piece. This tension, between the limits of handcraft and the precision of geometry, led me to a question: was there a better way to bring the designs in my head into reality?

Transformation: From a Grad School Python Project to a Digital Design Tool

The turning point came when I entered graduate school for occupational therapy, where I needed to learn programming for research data analysis. Partway through, it clicked: weren't functions, loops, and conditionals exactly the tools needed to handle arithmetic sequences and geometric symmetry?

So, as a personal challenge while learning Python, I took on "drawing dreamcatchers with code" — and successfully wrote functions that could calculate and render base patterns automatically from just a few input parameters. Later, while building several research apps during grad school, a bigger idea began to take shape: if code could help me draw with precision, why not build an intuitive tool that could help makers and creators everywhere do the same?

The project sat on the shelf for a while. But this year, riding the wave of AI and "vibe coding," I revived the logic I'd written years earlier. Working together with an AI agent, I brought these algorithms to life step by step — and Tela Aurea Lab was born. It's no longer just code on my laptop, but a real, working design tool that turns ideas into SVG vector files.

Returning to the Roots: Honoring Tradition, and an Invitation Across the Pacific

Even while I was absorbed in unpacking the mathematics and geometry of dreamcatchers, I always knew that this craft carries deep cultural meaning rooted in Ojibwe/Anishinaabe tradition, and that it has since traveled — and been shared, adapted, and sometimes taken — far beyond its origins. Early on, I tried to understand its history and traditional techniques through Cath Oberholtzer's book Dream Catchers: Legend, Lore and Artifacts. But here in Taiwan, I struggled to find a community that could speak to this history on a deeper level.

The real turning point came just as Tela Aurea Lab was taking shape. When I shared this new tool online, I received a comment from Gretel Palmerin, an educator in California. Gently but firmly, she reminded me: invite the Indigenous communities for whom dreamcatchers are part of their own culture to the table.

Her words struck a chord, and they became the quiet hope behind this site. That small act of kindness opened an unexpected door. Through this exchange, I came to know Maggie Peters, an educator in Humboldt County, California, who works to advance Native American Studies curricula — and who is also using the UN Sustainable Development Goals to build cross-cultural educational connections between Indigenous communities in California and Taiwan. This gave me a glimpse of what Tela Aurea Lab could become.

This is a sincere, open invitation. Tela Aurea Lab hopes to build real connections with Indigenous communities and educational institutions in North America, and with dreamcatcher artists around the world. We hope this tool can be more than a design aid — that it can become a small part of preserving and sharing this beautiful culture, so that everyone who draws a line here can come to understand and respect the history behind it.
